STARTING YOUR TECH BUSINESS IN MALAYSIA

Malaysia Tech Entrepreneur Programme (MTEP) is an initiative created by Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) to fast-track work visa applications for tech entrepreneurs from around the world to help them establish their startups in Malaysia faster.

The MTEP is designed for tech founders who are interested to capture the ASEAN market from Malaysia, and has two categories:
New Foreign Entrepreneur and Established Foreign Entrepreneur.

Established Entrepreneur

Eligibility: A non-Malaysian individual who may be a self-employed person that have a strong digital proposition and proven track record (more than 3 years established with the latest 2-year financial records).

Pass type: Residence Pass (RP-MTE) up to 5 years.

Requirements:

• 3 months personal bank statement (minimum amount of RM50,000 but not limited to Malaysian banks) and proof of business performance

• Declaration form from Malaysian sponsor or individual

• A certificate of good conduct, to be issued by respective applicant’s residing country’s embassy

• Application fee begins from RM5,300 (approx USD1,200) for a 5-year pass

New Entrepreneur

Eligibility: A non-Malaysian individual who may be a self-employed person with an innovative business idea in the digital field/platform and have a strong digital proposition. To qualify, a New Entrepreneur is required to participate by signing up with a Malaysia Digital Hub, such as Common Ground.

Pass type: Professional Visit Pass (PVP-MTE) valid for 1 year.

Requirements:

• 3 months personal bank statement (minimum amount of RM50,000 but not limited to Malaysian banks)

• Personal bond document signed by Malaysia Digital Hub or MTEP recognised partners

• Letter of Offer/Tenancy Agreement from any Malaysia Digital Hub or MTEP recognised partners

• A certificate of good conduct, to be issued by respective applicant’s residing country’s embassy

• Application fee begins from RM2,650 (approx USD 600) for a 1-year pass

How long is the application process?

With a complete document submission, verification process will take six (6) weeks for approval. Approval is given by MDEC and the Issuance of MTEP Pass is given by the Malaysian Immigration Office.
